I am primarily a tonalist watercolour portrait artist with twin passions of music and art. As a jazz singer, also learning jazz piano and writing songs, musicians were a natural subject choice for my first exhibition in 2006, which were portrayed in warm sepia tones and black and white I particularly love faces, strong tonal contrast, and the effect of light on a subject. I paint with a soft realism at times washed out into a vignette, to concentrate the focus on the face with its infinite variety of expression and depth of emotion.
After a recent trip to Japan during Cherry Blossom time, I photograhed and was enchanted by Japanese Geisha, and have prepared a body of new work in watercolour, gouache, silver and gold paint and platinum and gold leaf. I have an upcoming exhibition at Gig gallery Glebe November 4th-9th 2008 with 2 Auckland artists, Chandra Marks and Allison Henry, called "Pretty Girls". I endeavour to capture their serenity beauty and humility, with their ornate intricate and finely detailed kimonos, along with the attention to detail and the perfectionism of the japanese culture.
